The use of drugs in pregnancy

The problem of the influence of different drugs on pregnancy and fetal development is still one of the most relevant. All modern medicines contain the instructions in the section “use in pregnancy”. Unfortunately, there often appears only the phrase “the advisability of the appointment during pregnancy is solved individually” or something similar. But how to understand?

Drugs and pregnancy: myths

The two most common myth about the use of medicines during pregnancy are as follows: there are no safe drugs, and safe any natural (herbal) remedies.

With regard to the first claim, a certain dose of truth in it. A pregnant woman should totally give up any funds that have not been prescribed by a doctor. The doctor, in turn, must report the pregnancy.

The claim that everything natural is harmless, any reasonable person is at least a smile. If we recall history, we chemically synthesized substances appeared much later, as the village witch using only natural and organic herbs have had abortions, eliminate unwanted people, and so on. You should remember: the uncontrolled use of herbs during pregnancy is strictly prohibited.

Regarding diverse dietary supplements that lately have filled the airwaves and store shelves, to make them pregnant all the more not worth it. None of the SUPPLEMENTS were not necessary for drug clinical trials (even if the advertisement says otherwise).

A conditional exception can be only the vitamins and minerals that are registered as dietary supplements.

Another myth associated with medications during pregnancy, relates to drugs for the treatment of chronic diseases. The woman, needing constant medication (e.g., diabetes, problems with the thyroid gland, and so on) in any case should not abandon medication or change their dose.

Drugs and pregnancy: impact

Influence of drugs on the unborn child is treated usually in the context of possible malformations.

All substances that enter the body of the mother, to a certain extent neutralized the placental barrier and gets to the child in much smaller quantities. It is clear that to do this, the placenta must already exist as a body. Recall that its formation begins with 5 weeks of gestation and is completed by the twelfth.

The most dangerous for the child the action of certain factors in the early stages of development. Here the rule is: the earlier hazardous substance has affected the future of the child, the more severe will be the consequences. For this reason, try to limit the medication in the first trimester, when some of them can cause rough, incompatible with life fetal malformations.

Safe and dangerous medications

In 1980 the American organization FDA, in quality control of medicines and food ingredients, divided drugs into five categories, respectively the possible risk to the fetus.

Today this classification and is used in most countries in the world, along with “local” classifications.
